POLITICS IN PERSPECTIVE: EPISODE 2

Today we’re joined by Dr. Anping Shen, Committee Member of the Newton School Committee from Ward 3, who was elected in 2017. He has been active in the Newton community for more than 25 years, including serving the Newton Chinese Language School in a variety of roles, including as the PTO Chair, principal and even founding Board Chair. Furthermore, Shen served on the School Council for Newton Public School’s Lincoln-Eliot Elementary School, Horace Mann Elementary School (where he also served as its School Council Co-Chair), and Newton North High School. He has also previously held roles on the Newton superintendent search committee and strategic planning team. Shen also held positions on the Newton Human Rights Commission and on the board of the Newton Historical Society. Professionally, Shen has been an educational specialist at the Massachusetts State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for over 20 years and he holds a BA from Suzhou University in China, and M.Ed and D.Ed from Boston University. Shen and his wife have resided in Newton for 29 years and have two children, both graduates of Newton North High School. During the past few years he has also served as the founding president of the Chinese American Association of Newton and has been involved in the Newton Education Support Network. Join us as we discuss his ambitious career in politics, learn more about minority political involvement, and take a journey into the inner workings of local politics.
